Pa’ Gozar! Intro To Clave & Afro-Latin Rhythm

5/26/24 @ noon
Vern Burton Lawn

In this workshop we explore the rich and varied rhythmic legacy of the African Diaspora by studying rhythms from West Africa, Brazil, and the Caribbean. Rhythms will be introduced through hands-on participation, movement, call & response, and collective jamming. We will also seek to broaden our understanding of the cultural and historical context of each rhythm and how it functions in traditional and popular music from its place of origin. In particular, we look at clave (which literally means “key” in Spanish) and how it informs the many interlocking parts which give music from these cultures its powerful groove. Participants will leave with a deeper appreciation and understanding of clave-based rhythm and how they can apply it to their own music on the path toward greater rhythmic mastery. All ages, abilities, and instruments are welcome. www.duendelibre.com
