Education
The Juan de Fuca Festival is proud to provide activities that foster an appreciation of the arts in the hearts and minds of the young people of the North Olympic Peninsula.
2013 Juan de Fuca Discovery Arts Camp – “Discover the Artist Within”

It’s Back! We are sooo excited to offer our week-long summer camp from July 29 to August 2 for kids 5-10 years old. Like last year, we’ll be focusing on drama, creative movement, and visual arts on the Jefferson Elementary School campus in Port Angeles, WA. And, parents, you get to drop off the kids for three-hours in the morning, five days in a row, and enjoy a much-needed break while school is out! Click here for more details about this camp and our amazing instructors.
Youth Day at the Juan de Fuca Festival
Each year over 1800 students fill the Vern Burton Center for our annual student program during the Festival’s opening day. In 2013, the student shows move up the hill to the Port Angeles High School for a series of district-wide performances by the Sierra Leone’s Refugee All Stars. WIth three different shows, this change of venue will allow us to accommodate over 3,300 students (the entire local student body).
Hoping to foster peace in the world, the Sierra Leone Refugee All Stars will bring their stories as surviving refugees and their music of hope to the entire Port Angeles School District. Physical Comedian Henrik Bothe will also perform.
In past years years we have featured:
- 2007 – A show from the Pacific Science Center and Aché Brasil.
- 2008 – Kuniko Yamamoto, a Japanese storyteller and Portland Taiko.
- 2009 – Chata Addy and Global Heat African culture through song and dance.
- 2010 – “Legends of Mexico” Nuestro Canto, and Morpho-Man Christian Swenson.
- 2011 – Rhys Thomas – Jugglemania, physics through circus acts, and Kazum, an acrobalance circus troupe.
- 2012 - Baka Beyond brought the culture & music of the Cameroon pygmy tribe to elementary students, and
and the multi-cultural, all women group, Zili Misik, entertained the Port Angeles High School student body.

Art Shows at the Juan de Fuca Festival (K-12) |
Students on the North Olympic Peninsula are invited to submit artwork for Jim’s Pharmacy Student Art Show featured in the atrium at the Festival’s Vern Burton Center.
Also, the Juan de Fuca Festival, in conjunction with the Port Angeles Arts Council the Downtown Association and the Port Angeles School District, presents the Children’s Downtown Art Show, featuring artists in grades K to 8. This show is displayed throughout the downtown area from May 19 through the Festival (May 29). Up to 1,000 pieces will be displayed!
Book-It Theatre School Presentations |
Many schools participate in the Book-It Repertory Theatre presentations, offered during the fall season. This professional traveling troupe has wowed area school children with such classics as Johnny Appleseed, Sadako & the 1000 Paper Cranes, La Miraposa, Trickster Tales and the Prince of the Pond and Where The Mountain meets the Moon. This season’s production, Thanks You, Mr. Falker, was presented in five elementary schools in Port Angeles and Sequim. These annual productions have become a favorite event for our area elementary schools, eliciting kudos from both teachers and students.
